FC2, Sound system weirdness

Hey all

Have a strange problem regarding FC2 and sound. First up, the sound system
is working fine in most apps (Xine, Mplayer, xmms etc). When I do
"Soundcard Detection" on the task menu it works fine (Model: Ectiva EV1938
Module:snd-ens1371) and the test sound plays perfectly.

The problem is the mixer/volume controls. When I try to adjust the
volume on the taskbar slider, it remains stuck right down on zero. Doing
the same with the task menu volume control applet (gnome-volume-control)
returns an error "Sorry, no mixer elements and/or devices found".

Here is lsmod output (non sound related parts trimmed)

[root@apollo root]# lsmod
Module Size Used by
snd_pcm_oss 45352 0
snd_mixer_oss 17792 1 snd_pcm_oss
snd_ens1371 22372 0
snd_rawmidi 21924 1 snd_ens1371
snd_seq_device 10120 1 snd_rawmidi
snd_pcm 76804 2 snd_pcm_oss,snd_ens1371
snd_page_alloc 12040 1 snd_pcm
snd_timer 22532 1 snd_pcm
snd_ac97_codec 59140 1 snd_ens1371
snd 45028 8 snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_ens1371,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq_device,snd_pcm,snd_timer,snd_ac97_codec
gameport 7424 1 snd_ens1371
soundcore 10336 1 snd

So, I am assuming that I am using the wrong mixer app here (OSS vs ALSA
perhaps?).

Accordingly, I try the /usr/bin/alsamixer command and this works fine,
but it is text based, not a gui. So where is a gui version of this app I
wonder? It would be nice to be able to adjust the volume without having to
resort to the command line after all.

I have seen during my google searching on this problem people referring
to "xamixer" or "xamixer2". According to http://rpm.pbone.net this applet
is part of the alsa-utils package. I check my system and this package is
indeed already installed.

Unfortunately, I don't seem to have an appropriate binary on my system.

[root@apollo /]# find -name *amix*
./usr/bin/alsamixer
./usr/bin/amixer

Just in case, I removed the alsa-utils packatge and reinstalled it. Still
no good.

So my question is, what gui mixer app should I be using, and where do I
find/get it from? Or am I barking completely up the wrong tree here? It
wouldn't be the first time I assure you :-)
