removal of usb flash disk

I searched Google groups, www.linux-usb.org, and my 4 linux books, but
can't find any info on how to do "safe removal" of a usb flash disk (or
other device) with linux. My flash disk automatically powers up as
/dev/sda1, mounts OK as /mnt/memstick and I can read and write to it.
umount works, but does not remove power from the device. Unplugging it
hot doesn't seem to hurt it, but under Windows they recommend and allow
removal of power before unplugging the device. Is there a way to do
this with linux? I have an AMD K6-2 running Red Hat 9. Thanks.
