Well, what I did when I started playing with Linux, was to burn several
distributions, and I chose my first distribution solely on the hardware
that was supported out of the box. You may try Fedora Core, Mandrake or
SuSE. For me, at that point, Fedora was best. Because I had a reasonably
functional system by then, I could start learning, and thus move over to
another distribution that had other strongpoints, since I could
troubleshoot problems myself by then. At that point, I used SuSE, which
didn't give me sound immediately, but I was able to solve that. After that,
I moved on to Gentoo, for some more training, and now I'm reasonably sure I
can solve most basic problems.
So: the best way is to find a distro that allows you to start with a
reasonable comfortable system and move on from there.
