True, but there are many examples of technologies where intellectual
rights were secured but offered free. The one that immediately comes to
mind is Java/Javascript - which is why Microsoft has been forced by Sun
to toe the line on standardisation.

True, but looking outside the general infrastructure there are
exceptions. It's hard to do any browsing today without encountering a
Flashed website. Other common technologies encountered where
intellectual property rights do exist include PDFs and LZW (fortunately
the latter was allowed to expire last year).
