I didn't say compile the kernel itself, it was my beleif that i had to
compile the source code TO the kernel for it to become registered.

And which directory would you place the GIMP source files for this to
work?

Well if they're command line you don't need to install them you just
run the file, i.e. type 'gimp' in the command prompt.

Yeah i had to do this and i wasn't really ready to make such a bold
step and things did go a bit tits up, can't remember why i needed to
but i was really struggling at the time just to do the basics.

I will definetly be putting SuSE on at the weekend and will find out
the command line syntax to install software and hopefully will enjoy
it a whole lot more... fingers crossed eh?
