Hi

Last sunday I was helping a friend who had a problem with his Windows XP
box (now theres a surprise), he had various viruses, and spywhere
(ditto previois () ), whnich had been removed. In the process of this
the internet broke.

I took various cd's with me, namely my collection of Linux cd's he has
ADSL, anyway, to make sure that the problem was really with the
software (windows) and not hardware related I booted Knoppix 3.6, it
detected the ADSL, network card, no problem and was stright on the net,

Back to windows, and calls to various tech suppot lines, ISP and
Microsoft, I fixed the problem (deleted winsock and winsock 2 from the
registry)

Try booting Knoppix and see if it detects your hardware, As I said it
just booted and worked, so perhaps the same thing will happen in your
case. If it works out of the box for me then it should do for most
people.

a few useful commands could be

ifconfig
this will give you various bits of info, and you should be able to work
out if you are on the net from that,

ifconfig eth0 up / down
brings your eth0 interface up or down respectivly,

Have a go, also I really suggest get your self a good book on Linux,
or read the ldp pages.

Also it may help if we knew more about your hardware, again if knoppix
actually boots but does not connect to the net goto a shell prompt and
type dmesg to get a list of boot messages, then type dmesg > bootmesg
to do the same and dump to a file, copy this to a floppy, and then
read through so you know what hardware it has, it says on boot if it's
found any network to connect to.
