And sharing the internet connection of one of the machines.

No problem as far as I know - haven't tried it.

My home network of 3 computers (Pentium: Win 95, AMD: Linux/Win 98, 486:
FreeBSD/Dos+Win3.1) uses a switch, with one of the computers also acting as
the internet gateway. Each computer has a network card cabled to the
switch. My modem sits on the gateway machine. I use dial-up, and am still
trying to find the time to sort out dial on demand - I currently have to
manually start/stop the connection on the gateway machine whenever I want to
use the internet from either of the other machines (Win ET can't phone home
off my network).

With respect to sharing hardware between the computers. I can't say as all
I share is my printers (via samba).
