emerge kde in gentoo linux

Hi
I can't get any of the gentoo groups so I'm posting here and hoping for
the best.
I trying to emerge kde and as soon as it calculates it's dependancies
it starts attempting a net connection to download kde. I installed gentoo
from a cdrom so the apps and the portage tree should be in sync and the
mag said not to rsync at any stage of the set up. Anyway as a stand alone
install with a modem I didn't think that I needed to worry about it.
Any help would be great thanks
