Can I download a distro for for free (for now)?

Hi,

I used Linux years ago but had to go back to Windows to use software
that I need. I want to go back to Linux but with Christmas I am a
little broke for a few months!

Can I download the Mandrake 10.1 'community' version? Is that still
functional or is it more like 'cripple' or 'trial' ware? Can I still
install proper Nvidia drivers and other nice software? Is there another
Distro that may be better for now?

I will subscribe eventually but it seems to be approximately $100
Australian for one year which is quite a lot (for a good cause I know
though!)

Thoughts welcome!!!
