Please recommend: DVD Burner for Linux?

<OT_complaint>Argh. Western consumerism makes me bonkers. There are
simply too many things to buy.</OT_complaint>

Okay, so I need a DVD burner. I run Linux. In fact, I am using Fedora
Core 2.

I have an old-ish ASUS A7V333 mobo.

My questions are:

What DVD player? (brand and model number) I want the least amount of
hassle and am willing to sacrifice burn speed for less hassle.

Also, what is better, DVD+R? -R? WTF??

I tried a Plextor PX712SA but I did not realize that the "SA" meant "SATA"
and I could not get it to work even after buying a Promise SATA
controller. (My problems appear hardware related as it will not even get
past BIOS post stage). So I was considering a Plextor PX712A (no "S" --
EIDE) but it is sold out on buy.com so I am considering others.

Anyone have experience with the Sony DRU710A? (These are <$100US these
days)

How about Memorex?

How about any other brand?

Also, while I'm at it, can anyone recommend a PCMCIA 56k modem for Linux?

Thanks!
