Update:

I bought a Epson CX-6600 and ended up taking it back. I could get it to
print but not scan. Seems Epson is working on the Linux drivers but they
are ot all completed and up to date. That model being fairly new it
didn't work to my liking.

Finally decided on a HP PSC-2355 which after installing the HPOJ backend
driver works like a charm.
