Alsa midi question

I'm still fairly new to linux and I thought I'd have some fun and install
some alsa midi packages such as alsamodularsynth, vkeybd etc. I can't seem
to perform the simple task of clicking a key on vkeybd and having the sound
play through my speakers. I also can't find any simple instructions on the
net how to do this. I've tried making every possible connection of ports
with kaconnect but to no avail. My card is an audigy 2 zs. Anyone have
any ideas? Thanks
