The issue won't be the harddrive, but the chipset for your SATA, the kernel
you are using, may be old and don' have SATA support or/and the distro you are
using don't compile the SATA modules.

There are many methods how to connect to a network, most commonly methods are
static and dynamical over dhcp, if you need to use pppoe or pppoa, then you
need a bit tweaking by yourself, make a visit at www.tldp.org to find some HOWTOs.
