Crash reading defective cd

If I try to read files on a damaged cd or dvd, my system freezes completely
instead of reporting i/o errors; but if I try to read the media through its
device with readcd and not through the mounted filesystem I get read errors
but no crash.
Can this be a problem with isofs? I'm using kernel 2.6.10 vanilla.
