There are gazillions of sites that explain this and you should be able to
find some documentation on Mandrake specific kernels as well. Just google
it and have a look at www.tldp.org

But, I would stay away from it if I were you. I used to compile my own
kernels, but for about two years I have been using stock kernels only.
Makes upgrading and (security) fixing so much easier.

The rivafb kernel driver shouldn't be a problem, at least it isn't with
recent SuSE and Debian on my system. I do get a warning during NVIDIA
install, but I ignore it and everything works like a charm since I never
actually use rivafb. For a free alternative to Mandrake/-driva I would
look at a Debian based distro like Ubuntu.
