help installing SDL 1.2.8 on slack

Hi im trying to install zsnes on my slackware system. The install file
for zsnes says i need SDL 1.2 or higher. I downloaded the
SDL-1.2.8.tar.gz file. into /home/sdl/SDL-1.2.8/ and ran ./configure
this is what i get....
checking build system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu
checking host system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu
checking target system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu
checking for a BSD-compatible install... /usr/bin/ginstall -c
checking whether build environment is sane... configure: error: newly
created file is older than distributed files!
Check your system clock
IM not to sure what to do here any ideas will help, do i need to
download any of the runtime libraries? im running slackware 10.0.
