Batch rename files

I would like to transfer picture files from one PC to another using my
digital camera as a transfer device.

On the source machine the files are stored using a filename that
incorporates the date and a unique number however the camera appears to be
limited to an 8 character filename with a 3 char extension.

Is there a simple way to update all the files in a folder so they have
unique names that are 8 or less chars ?
