I bought a refurb eMachines Athlon 64 equipped computer. Had problems with
the OS (XP Home, mangled by eMachines) deteriorating to uselessness within a
week after install. Finally got tired of it all and bought a copy of XP
Professional and installed it. My OS files size dropped from 15 GB to 5 GB
and I have not had a single OS related problem with it since.
I recently installed Fedora (came with the "Linux Bible" book - great book
and free software included) and have not had a minute's trouble with either
XP Professional (Home would have been fine too) and Linux, other than I
don't know what I'm doing with Linux and haven't managed to load an
application yet. No time to read the Linux Bible yet.
I got a great deal on my eMachines refurb, but I don't think much of the
company's version of XP Home, for various reasons that I won't go into.
