It's not the big brands you have to look out for, it's the big chipset
manufacturers. For example, when setting up a wireless network with
ndiswrapper, I bought two cheap wireless NICs because I knew they had
the RTL8180 chipset, and I knew people mostly always had success with
this chipset. All I needed was the driver from the RealTek website to
get going.
Many brands of PCI IEEE1394 adapters probably use a VIA chipset.
If in doubt, just go to www.linuxquestions.org and have a look at their
small HCL, and see which devices have a higher success rate.
