The "best" version should be the latest stable version, which is now up on
2.6.12.5, but it don't always need to be the best, as you may have other
requirements like there is an outdated driver for a device that requires you
to use 2.2.x, then 2.2.26 would be the best.
Visit www.kernel.org for information about the latest versions of linux.
If you really just wanted to know best distro, there aren't a such as it's
quite a lot about each persons taste, visit www.linuxiso.org and
www.distrowatch.com for information about different distros, pick one that
feels right for you.
