Best desktop distribution for computer novice?

I'm helping a friend (who isn't particularly loaded with cash) who
would like to have a home PC. I'm setting her up with an HP computer
with a 300mhz PII processor.

I work with Linux on the server side, but I'd appreciate suggestions on
current distributions for the desktop that are particularly
user-friendly.

My friend works with a PC during the day, and so that's the environment
she's most comfortable with. She'll use the home PC primarily for web
surfing, email and some letter-writing (probably via Open Office?)
