Newbie questions

Hi,

I just downloaded Linux (Ubuntu) live CD and ran it for the first time
off Win XP machine. I like it a lot so far, but have some questions:

1) I can't see the content of my computer's hard disk. I understand
that it's a Win XP filesystem, but shouldn't I at least be able to see
the drive itself ?

2) I couldn't find a firewall. Do I even need one, running off CD-ROM ?

3) Where can I save files ?
