Is your Toshiba a centrino? I use Linux on a Toshiba laptop. A lot of
distributions don't work with the Toshiba fan and power management with
the default installation. Two distros that do are Suse and Debian
(including Ubuntu, Knoppix, etc.). I can't remember if SLAX does or not,
but you can boot the live cd and check. I've settled on Ubuntu for my
Toshiba laptop and bought a used Orinoco Gold wireless card for $25.
It works great, and I almost never have to go into Windows for anything.

I never could get them working when I was using Fedora Core 3 -- it's not
an easy install for a beginner so I generally use distributions that
already have the utilities included.
