Yes, there are Challenge-Response Systems (CRSs) for
    Linux. Google this string:

    "challenge response" OR "challenge-response"

But be wary: The Web is like the Usenet: Anyone can post anything
there and spammers and trolls REALLY hate CRSs because they
    can't beat them.

Needless to say, they have no qualms about lying.

For my little mickey mouse (but very effective) program, see:

    http://home.earthlink.net/~alanconnor/elrav1/

(I don't answer questions about it on the Usenet. You'll have
to mail me and get past my CRS. See the contact page on my
    website.)

For a very simple CRS if you aleady have good spam filtering:

    http://www.uwasa.fi/~ts/info/spamfoil.html

Or take a look at your ISP/MSP's spam filtering services. ISPs
like Earthink have been offering CRS protection to all of their
    clients for years.

    And yes, they are RFC-compliant:

RFC 3834: Recommendations for Automatic Responses to Electronic Mail

    http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc3834.html

CRSs have been used by businesses and non-profit orgs for decades,
to weed out spammers and trolls.

Their use is one of the reasons that most mailing lists don't have
    problems with spammers and trolls.

Sign up for a mailing list, and you get an auto-response that needs
to be returned before your subscription is accepted. That's a
    Challenge-Response.

Email a big company or non-profit org and often you will get an
auto-response asking you to go to a website and fill out a
form. That's a Challenge-Response: If you didn't use your real
address, then you won't get the auto-response and won't fill out
the little webform and your mail will be dumped.

Complain about abuse on the Usenet to an NSP, and they'll mail
you back at the address you provided. If you don't return that
mail, then your complaint will be dumped. That's a CR.
