I used to have a good old AMD Duran base computer running at 745mhz, it
was able to run both windows and linux. Sometime ago it got fried. I
bought used motherboard with CPU. It is Intel Celeron 800mhz, I
installed this motherboard on my AMD case. I thoguht since AMD and
Intel base motherboard shared same type of power supply it should be
okay. I was wrong.

At first everything seems fine, I could see everything on the screen, I
could even go to bio setting and change things. However, once I try
loading my live linux cd, it would not load. I hooked my harddrive with
preinstall windows 9x, and it was loaded fine. However, it would give
blue screen If I try installing anyting, and it would randomly reboot
itself. I try using differnt Linux Live CD, Conective Live CD, Knoppix,
Morphix, none worked. I felt like I was ripped off ( which I am at some
level).

Second day I start searching on the internet, and I saw a posting about
computer randomly rebooting itself. Many people gave their opinion.
However, one guy said he was able to fixed the problem by changing his
powersupply. I decided to try what he did. I took my Pentium II
powersupply and used it with Celeron. It worked! I try using live CD,
Morphix, Knoppix, and Conectiva. All worked! I try installing Windows
9x on vfat, and linux. I was successful. I later bought P4 case, and
shop owner told me it should work fine with Celeron, he was right. It's
fine.

However, my success came with its on set of problems, or rather an old
problem. My AMD Duran box had a habbit of freezing to (before it got
fried), and this one does it so. What so strange is that it only happen
when I am using linux.

I believe, I start having this problems when I start using Samba and
dosbox. So once again, I am having this very strange problem, my linux
is keep freezing. I build this old system with some older stuff from
fried computer, and I wonder if my older hardware could be the problem.

My System is:

Intel Celeron 800mhz
250 SDRAM (from older system)
10 GIG Hard dirve (from older system)
DVD ROM (from older system).
LG CDRW (I have installed it into another PC)

Distro is based on Redhat
with 2.4.2 kernel
KDE 3.1.2

I thought the only thing that could give me the problem would be ram,
but if it was the case it would give me problem on Windows too, right?
However, Windows 9x is working okay on this. Further more, I am running
Linux since last night with using samba, and it's working fine. This
makes me wonder, it's it the software...

As I said before my computer freezes when I use Samba to conect to
another computer. I have to do this becaue I share files between
windows and linux, not to mention printer...

I'm using Redhat base distro called Conectiva (now merged with
Mandrake).
It's running on kernel 2.4.1 and KDE version is 3.1.2. I know my distro
and hardware are older, but I don't wanna build new pc (I'll talk about
that in next post)

Why do you guys think is the problem? How can I find out if it's the
hardware or software?

PS: English is not my 1st language. Thanks for understanding.
