SUSE Linux, is along with Mandriva the most user's friendly Linux
available, in my view.
SUSE is available for free (download), use the latest version (10), and
create CD's or one DVD, to install it.
Install OpenOffice as the options, as well a Firefox, and you will have a
very good PC to browse the Internet and do "standard stuff".
There is more into it, but this could be a good start.
After this the proprietary OS's will not look so good anymore, and your
friend will love Linux.
Just make sure that you set a directory tree where he has all the
authorisations (privileges).
In SUSE all the "difficult stuff" is hidden behind a nice GUI interface
call YAST2.
