Mail viewing program and web page editor

In windows there is a number of programs that allow you to go directly
to the mail server and see what is there.
They also allow you to read the mail, and if you don't want to
download it to your computer, delete it off the server.
Is there a program like this for Linux ?
Four years ago there wasn't.
The reason is that because of a number of web page that have my e mail
address on it I get a lot of spam. A lot with nasty viruses attached
too.
I know these aren't a problem with Linux but they still have to be
downloaded unless they can be deleted from the server.

I was also wondering if there are any good WYSIWYG web page editors
available.
Netscape Composer was pretty good and I tried to install it last night
but it was a no go.
It was written for kernel version 2.2 and I now have ver 2.6.These are
my last two stumbling blocks before the change over.
The newer Netscape Composer are OK but I would like to know what else
is out there.
I tried OpenOffice and it's just OK.
