I would say try using "Live Linux" long before you start installing
into your computer.
What you are looking for in a distro is there. However, you need to
check few things.
Does your computer have linux friendly hardware? The only way you will
know is by using "live cd". The amazing thing is that not only you will
be able to see if your hardware, video card, sound card, network card,
are able to work with linux, you will be able to run Linux application
from a live CD or DVD. Mostly live CD/DVD comes with open office,
multimedia software, and yes ability to see and mount Windows format.
Here is a list of live linux CD

Try them before install anyone version linux distro.
