I have played few dos games using dosbox on kubuntu (brother of
ubuntu), it should work. I assume you are playing dos games. However,
based on what you have said, sound drivers are not loaded.

I should mention that most onboard sound card don't work with Linux,
expect VIA and nVida, however, your motherboard may have Linux friendly
sound chip.
Try playing few mp3 files. If you don't hear any sound, then your sound
card may have not been loaded. I should mention that I am using onboard
sound, and I am able to play everything in Kubuntu (it's same as ubuntu
expect GUI is KDE :)
If you know how to use command try "--> lspci <--" it will display
information about all PCI buses in the system and all devices connected
to them.

According to Intel - they use linux friendly sound chip. I found
following information on Intel website.
----------------------------------------------------|
http://support.intel.com/support/graphics/sb/CS-010510.htm
Running Linux* on an Intel® Graphics Platform
Configuring Onboard Audio
First, you must determine which onboard audio solution you have. For
Intel® motherboards, this is easily determined by going to the Intel
motherboards web site and selecting your motherboard.
AC'97
AC'97 audio for Intel motherboards using ICH (82801AA), ICH0 (82801AB),
or ICH2 (82801BA), ICH3M (82801CAM), ICH4/M (82801DB/M), or ICH5/R
(82801EB/ER) should be automatically detected in kernel 2.4.22 or later
as "i810 audio."
For best results, always use the latest production, stable kernel.
If you are attempting to use AC'97 on a new chipset, it is highly
likely that you will not get sound and you will have to compile your
own kernel when the appropriate patches have been released.
Creative Labs*
Creative Labs* onboard audio utilizes an ESS Audio* chip. Configure
your kernel to use Sound Blaster* or ESS Audio sound hardware.
ALSA
The ALSA* ?(Advanced Linux Sound Architecture) project is backward
compatible with OSS* and is rapidly becoming the standard sound system
for Linux. Follow the simple instructions provided by ALSA*.

If you are willing to download few more Linux ISO, I would suggest try
downloading Live CDs.
http://www.frozentech.com/content/livecd.php
Some live Cd are full of games, try above link. If they can hear sound
with them then ubuntu may have buggy kernel (trust me !). In that case
I would recommand that you either buy sound card, or install a
different distro. You won't be able to fix anything in Ubuntu, it took
me five days to fix root account! Ubuntu/Kubuntu are good for newie,
but lot to be desire when it comes to configuring, and administing. I
will be removing it from my hard drive very soon due to their sudo
fetishes.
I loath sudo.
