I agree generally if the intent is to learn PHP, MySQL, Apache, etc. But
IMO, Linux is not the platform to start trying to do "painless" bleeding
edge proprietary things, like video or HDTV development and marketing.

In the 10 or so years I've done Linux it's come a long way with hardware
support, in spite of M$ connivance with proprietary gatekeepers in doing
their best to pick their customers' pockets. I'd suggest the OP download
and burn a live CD for a testdrive (or even a minimal floppy distro like
Tom's or blueflops).

As you say any recent Linux is generally much better at hardware support
overall than recent Windows, in (to me) an ironic role reversal. I used
to watch the MCSE crowd at work tear their hair out whenever a driver or
other "upgrade" would reduce a vast Doze install to a steaming pile.

What I find with Linux and old(er) hardware generally: It Just Works.
