It doesn't come with gcc and when I try to install it, I hit some kind

Then are you a serious user? There are many docs about how to get Ubuntu
to do stuff, and http://www.ubuntuguide.org/ answers all these questions.
If it takes more than 3 hours to sort out, I could just install another
distro. One I can use
to do stuff rather than just tinker with.
