Then are you a serious user? There are many docs about how to get Ubuntu
to do stuff, and http://www.ubuntuguide.org/ answers all these questions.

I'm sorry, but that's SCO-grade FUD. It takes about 5 minutes to
start, and learn to use, Synaptic. Everything from then on is a
mouseclick away. Start something downloading

I had no network connectivity at the time. Hence the concern with
getting the stuff
I want on the installation medium.

and it's generally ready to
use when you get back from making a cup of coffee.

And Ubuntu only takes about 40 minutes or so to install.

Yes: distros that have the stuff I want tend to take longer.

Finally, you're quite welcome to use another distro if you want.

SuSE 10.0 at the moment.

But
don't diss people using Ubuntu to do serious work.

It didn't suit the set of constraints I was working under at the time.
I have recommended it to other people and even installed it for them.
David Blizzard made the comment about serious users.

There are a lot of us.

Here's a question for you, then: Can I get it to work with wireless
without gcc ? (ie
without being able to make NDISwrapper ?)
