'High Level' info on LDAP

I'm looking at creating a database system that's easy for users to add and search records (which also includes scanned images). My users are primarily Windows users, but I want to keep the database on the Linux side. I have created some small databases using MS Access, but want to break away from MS altogether. The database will be used for a quoting system that will store drawings with the quote.

I'm not familiar at all with LDAP or any other system. I've googled for some time now, but I've only been able to find info on how to set it up - which is fine. But I don't know what the limits are, and if drawings can be added to the database. Also, I have no idea how clients can access the database and retrieve info. I do know that email clients can access an LDAP server for addresses, but that's about it.

So, my real question is if I have an LDAP server storing information, how can I access the information. What 'front end' can my users use to access the info. Do I *have* to write an application (or preferably create a web ui) for a front end? With an LDAP server, what other systems (php, perl, java, etc) can I use to access the info on an LDAP server.

I don't need how-to's. Just looking for capabilites or a little direction as to the best way to accomplish this. Or, links to sources that define capabilities/limits.

Thanks All!
