Hello
I am new to linux. I have been able to make most of the hardware work
with distro. It's Debian. However, my Lexmark 1000 printer is not
working. I download the driver from cups site but they are not very
good. One of my friend who is also using Linux - has a driver which
works perfectly, however he is not sure where cups might be keeping the
driver - and he is using redhat. Is it possible for me to use redhat
base driver on debian base?
You can take a look at www.linuxprinting.org but if I would you, I would considering of buying a new printer, as Lexmark don't have linux support and much of the drivers are more kind of hacks to make it work.
Brands that works in general quite well under linux thanks to support from the companies in different ways are Canon, Epson and HP.
When it comes to cups drivers, you could copy those, as long as you don't copy the whole CUPS, as the distros don't have same version of the programs that CUPS depends on, which would lead to it not working on your distro that usually has older versions of programs if you are using the stable one.
