Dual boot Win98 and MandrakeLinux 10.1
I'm new to Linux, and haven't really done much on it but am trying to
get to know it's capabilities. One thing I would like to be able to do
is run my Win98 progs without having to re-boot. I believe this is
possible, using an emulator or something.
Can anyone direct me to something on the net that might get me going?
I have used vmware for several years with Suse Linux as host and Windows 98
as guest operating system. (Not because I love Windows but because I also
have to exchange Windows files with customers and OpenOffice is still not
compatible enough for some MS-Office files). Vmware gives you a virtual PC
under Linux and you can then install a genuine Windows operating system on
this virtual PC (and switch to and fro without rebooting). Vmware is
available for a 30-day trial period. The bad news is that if you decide to
buy it, it is not exactly cheap. On the other hand it is rock solid. You
can download a trial version here:
http://www.vmware.com/
If you decide to buy it, you just have to pay and you get sent a key to
convert the trial version to a real one.
VMWare has a VMWare Player avaialble for free download. There's also free
virtual machine creation software out there that's been done by some
industrious programmers. I don't know if creation software is avaialble for
Linux, but there is at least one Windows version avaialble that I know of.
It isn't that difficult to create your own playable virtual machine if you
do the research. You give up things like snapshots and stuff, but to just
be able to run the odd program, it does work really well.
