Video resolution snag

I'm trying to install a version of Caldera dating back to 2000. I read somewhere that you shouldn't try to install a distro older than the hardware. Not an issue here as it's a PC dating back to the same year. When I go through the install process, Caldera correctly identifies my video card.

So far so good. The next screen is to select your monitor. It brags that it lists 1700 monitors. The manufacturer of mine (Elements)does not appear. That's not a problem as it lets you punch in the specs for your unknown monitor. So I did.
Max Resolution 1600x1200
Horizontal scan freq. 30k to 95kHz
vertical scan freq. 50 to 150Hz
The next screen is "Select Video Mode." Up to this point, the screen has been perfectly clear. This is where things get weird. Regardless of the mode I select, there is a flicker when I test the mode. The left side of the screen is clear, the right side flickers. My first inclination was that it had to do with the horizontal frequency, but changing that does not eliminate the flicker. The flicker exists at all modes. I have googled and reviewed message boards, but I can't find an explanation anywhere.
I figure it has to be something simple, but I don't know what. My apologies if this has been discussed previously.
TIA
Charles
