Hi --
I am a Windows "guy" but I have an old P-3 machine that I want to play
around with Linux on. I do web design / development and I have played a
little with Apache on Windows. I am looking for a recommendation for a
version of Linux to install that will serve as the basic O/S that I can
then install Apache and MySQL onto to start to (try) to learn to build
dynamic web sites with using probably PHP. I'm not sure if I can just
install the kernal and then add the webserver and SQL on top of that or
what, so I'm looking for tips on which distribution has the least
amount of overhead.
Thanks,

www.distrowatch.com will by your good buddy. I'd suggest you choose one of
the mainline distros that can be installed without a GUI, or at least with
a minimal GUI. IMHO - it's still good to have a GUI around to facilitate
software maintenance (updates/upgrades and installs). I would suggest you
might look at the Elive CD - this is a live CD that will load and run from
the CD and then can be installed with a few button clicks. It uses
Enlightenment desktop which is much 'lighter' than KDE and Gnome which are
the 'standard' GUIs for most Linux installs. That's going to be a lot
cleaner and easier than most other options. You may want to look at
www.tldp.org (The Linux Documentation Project) for some howtos at some
point. At any rate you can't really just install the kernel, webserver and
sql. There would be additional dependencies to make that stuff work. How
much disk space do you have, and how much RAM? I've seen Elive run rather
nicely on a P-166 with 64MB.
