Back in 2000 Intel & CPU companies promised that they will be able to
sell 10 Ghz CPU around 2010. However, we the user have not seen any 5
Ghz cpu and it 2006 - that means since 2002 (that's 3 years!) companies
have not anything beyond 3Ghz CPU. How are they ever going to build 10
Ghz CPU when they have not even built any 5 Ghz cpu. I should also
point out that - compies were thinking of building single core cpu
(most likly 32bit). I should point out that Windows Vista, HD-DVD and
Blue-Ray will start shiping by the end of next years or so. This means
an average user would need at least 4.5 Ghz of CPU to run Windows
Vista, Anti Virus and process 25050 Gig HD-DVD -Blue Ray files!
It don't mean they have increase the clock speed with 1GHz per year. The main problem seems to be the bad core design that keeps them back and that they haven't managed to make CPUs with smaller "sizes" (> nm). If they manage to get pass the size issue, then they will be able to press the x86_32bit CPU toward maybe 5GHz. If the core design can be fixed, say use those in the pure x86_64bit with the size issue fixed too, then there is a good chance they will manage to get up to the 10GHz, but you will most likely need a lot better cooling system than the traditional ones with fans.
IMHO it's a lot better to improve the core design, shorten pipe lengths and that way increase the performance of the CPU without increasing the clock speed which will just generate more heat.
Although Linux users such as myself will be okay, however, this is very
bad for 90% users who are Windows User.
Who cares about those who has chosen to use a ill written OS?
