Thanks to all who replied to my "which Linux distro is best for me" post. I
will be busy with research for days, if not months.

My "one more question" is this: how easy is it to learn Linux these days?

How long is a piece of string. What are you wanting to learn.
Over a thousand commands, try not to get in a hurry.

It is like you are getting an auto parts house with a machine shop.
You can build anything you want or just pull something off the shelf.

Get Mandriva and you will be windows comfortable after install pretty quick.
For basic linux 101 command line info
http://doc.mandrivalinux.com/MandrakeLinux/101/en/Command-Line.html/

These will help getting a running start for applications

http://www.grokdoc.net/index.php/Application_Crossover_Chart

You want to dig deep into linux,
http://rute.2038bug.com/index.html.gz

Once you get that down, you can learn to write scripts from

! bash script introduction documentation
http://tldp.org/LDP/intro-linux/html/index.html
! bash script advanced documentation
http://tldp.org/LDP/abs/html/index.html

Then you can pick something larger from
http://tldp.org/
.
