I have saved the posts with links and am exploring them now. Thanks again.
I might suggest even paying for the commercial distro of Mandriva, that
way you get the commercial drivers for Nvidia, you get Skype (VoIP), etc.;
I paid for my first version of Mandriva (then known as Mandrake 8.2) years
ago, now I use the free verson downloadable or on DVD with a magazine, but
with paid version you get manuals, I think 30 days of tech support.
Beware of some distros that cripple playback of mp3 music and movies
(Suse, Fedora). I have always like Mandriva for its ease of use and ease
of playing multimedia. But there are other good distros out there.
I highly suggest you put Linux on its own dedicated hard drive, separate
from MS-Windows. Also when you install Linux make a partition for "/home"
(you will be asked during install). Do a dual-boot (Windows, Linux), then
do as much Linux as you can tolerate, do a slow migration to Linux. But if
all you want to do is get away from Micro$oft software like MS-WIndows,
you can download and install free open source software alternatives like
OpenOffice, GIMP, etc. for WIndows, you would not even need Linux.
