Kernel upgrade leading to X lock ups

I upgraded my kernel from a stock Ubuntu 2.6.10-6 kernel to a vanilla
kernel 2.6.16.9 with the vesafb-tng patch for high-resolution
framebuffered console.
Everything worked fine until I issued a 'startx'. I'm running X.org
6.8.2 from Ubuntu 5.04. X appears to load just fine (meaning I get the
initial mouse cursor that can move around), but after about 3-4 seconds
when fluxbox usually pops up, X locks my computer. I can't get to the
virtual consoles behind it either, so the entire computer (not just the
X server) seems to be frozen.
After a reboot, I erased my ~/.xinitrc to prevent my window manager
(fluxbox) from being loaded, and added the single line 'exec xterm'.
After another 'startx', xterm appears in the upper corner, and I can
type a few random commands for about 10 seconds, and then X locks
again, same as before. So I don't think it's a window manger issue.
Other than that, I don't know how to proceed. Do I have to recompile X
on a kernel upgrade? I haven't done this before, and don't entirely
know what 'needs to be done'.
PS: I checked /var/log/Xorg.0.log and /var/log/messages , and there
doesn't appear to be any messages relating to failed driver loads or
any such nonsense.
Is this typical? Does anybody have any ideas as to how to proceed? If
you need more info, just ask: I'll post what I can.
Thanks,
J. Bourne
