I upgraded my kernel from a stock Ubuntu 2.6.10-6 kernel to a vanillaNvidia card or another?
kernel 2.6.16.9 with the vesafb-tng patch for high-resolution
framebuffered console.
This is on a Dell Inspiron 6000 notebook, with an ATI Mobility Radeon
X300.
Skip the frambuffer for testing and use the radeon driver for X and see how it goes, I think it's the vesafb-tng that causes the problem for you, I think it takes down the whole X when it crashes, which leads to you can't switch to console as the "keyboard" don't react (ssh into the machine should still be possible).
