I later learned that Knoppix is not installable per se, but it can be saved
to a HDD file and booted from there thereafter. So I don't think I can
install it.

I enjoyed your site (I viewed it all) and I congratulate you on a productive
retirement. Thanks to a link you provided, I am now also a Registered Linux
User.

I am also a retired software developer, doing mostly military/aerospace
stuff (Lockheed, RCA, Harris Corp., and others). I did volunteer work for a
number of years.

If you don't mind, I found some typos on your site:
o "seb site" should read "web site".
o "can image" should read "can imagine".

I'm assuming that if you start an install it will ask where you want it to
go. I'm also assuming that it will ask before writing the MBR. So my
response would be that yes, it's most likely going to work. Perchance the
Knoppix web site would give a little more info. BTW I retired two years
ago. I'm currently doing consulting and web page development for
