Make your own package will solve the problem, for most package managers there
are howtos how to make your own package. If you know how to compile it won't
be difficult to make your own package with help of a template.

Actually, for rpm, you _don't_ compile. You build a spec file, and then
use rpm (rpm-build in later versions) to build and install the binary.
However, that is still a mess.

For RPM there is a nice little installer provided my Mandrivia that updates
the RPM database and install the files, not sure if there are such for deb.

or for other distributions that use rpm. The "howto" isn't the greatest
document ever written either.
