How can I put shortcuts on my desktop in Gnome/Ubuntu?

E.g. I'd like a shortcut to Mozilla Thunderbird.

I'd also like to add a few shortcuts to the bar on top of the screen the one that contains Applications/Places/System/Firefox, etc.
