Hey Ali, a few ideas (take them for what they're worth):
1) do system-config-display -noui when you're in runlevel 3 (append a 3
to your grub line)
2) in runlevel 3, do startx (you can kill this with ctl-alt-backspace)
and see what happens
3) also in runlevel 3, backup your xorg.conf, comment out the Driver
mga line and put Driver vga instead...
Sorry, I'm in the same boat that I don't use Matrox cards, but that's
what I'd generally start with. Runlevel 5 doesn't help anybody when
you're debugging X :)
