Sure, but you usually don't have to worry about them. Most are
in /tmp, /usr/tmp or /home/youracct/tmp, or any place you may wish to
create a tmp directory for your own purposes.
You can use the "rm" command to remove files and directories, but since you
are a Linux newbie I'd suggest using the filemanager. It works just like
Windows Explorer and will allow you to do similar things. If you need to
manage files that require root or other account permissions, you'll have to
run the GNOME file manager as root. I don't run GNOME. KDE is my
preferred desktop. I open a console and enter:
kdesu konqueror
It prompts me for the root password and then I have KDE's file manager
(Konqueror) running as root. When I right-click on a file or directory
and choose the delete option it is deleted. Konqueror is also a nice
browser. Hit F9 to toggle between file manager and browser mode.
