Unless you use reiser4 which isn't a part of default ubuntu kernels, there
should be no need for defragging - if you do not fill your partitions up to
the rim.
I still have some old AIX4 box hanging around at work (already retired)
which had a "defragfs" command - which basically copied around files.
Since filesize of a complete file is known, the OS can find a place where it
fits in as a whole.
Nevertheless, the common "elevator sort" mechanism tries to sort queued disk
accessses in ascending and then descending order to make heads "sweep" more
or less continuously around the plattern, optimizing overall access times.
