15 years ago I used to 'defrag' in Ultrix (DEC's early version of Unix) by doing
dump and restores - never made a hell of a lot of difference.
Come to think of it, in the early 1980's we never had to defrag the DEC VAX/VMS systems either, and we had about 20 of them. I'd forgotten that.
although defrag may not really needed for linux
there is such a thing
http://linux.maruhn.com/sec/defrag.html
though i have never used a linux defrag utility...
on bootup you should be able to see that there is in-fact discontinuity.
Thanks.
