There is a cognizant fact concerning what you are trying to do.
That is NOT the way I was taught to do it!
Here is my knowledge about this "USB BOOT" issue:
I have DSL (Damn Small Linux). It has concise instruction about booting, then burning to any USB device, a bootable image.
you can't 'install' a linux distro on a usb boot device. You create a bootable image there.
DL a copy of DSL. Right click anywhere on the screen, and select the TOOLs line, then choose USB BOOT, and figure out if your computer that is to boot off the USB device has an entry in the CMOS Setup for either
USB-ZIP (most systems since 1998-1999) or, USB-HDD ( most systems prior to about 1998).
That will install the proper devices onto the usb device so that it can boot other computers!
The other computers must have their boot device list setup configured to use USB-XXX as the first device, followed by your choice of items to boot, whenever the USB device isn't present!
DSL is a FULL featured Linux, based upon Debian, using either Xfce, or ICEwm (YOUR Choice!), so the Gnome or KDE features aren't there, and the entire distro is only 49.8Mb, and fits on a Business card CDrom, or a mini-cd! It DOES include ALL the great Linux tools!
I carry many of the Linux mini distros everywhere!
So, the bottom line is to do the DSL USB boot configuration, and when you are comfy with that, you can figure out how the other distros should do the USB boot!
